The OZ-Deck Foundation System 12 in. x 12 in. Deck Plate OD-T4 is an accessory for the T4-850 and T6-700 OZ-Post to provide load bearing capacity required for deck construction. OZ-Deck provides the same strength and stability of conventional construction techniques with less labor and lower cost. Installation is easy; simply locate the deck plates where your posts are required and drive the OZ-Post through them. The jackhammer installation method makes installation fast and also compacts the soil beneath the plate to prevent the OZ-Deck from settling over time. The revolutionary design of OZ-Deck allows them to be utilized in soft terrain and also in regions that are subjected to freeze-thaw conditions. The OD-T4 meets ICC (International Code Council) IRC-2006 (International Residential Code for one- and two-family dwellings 2006) 2006 IRC, R403.1.4.1 Exception 3 and has been independently tested with loads exceeding 6500 lbs.

The ORANGE Hammer-Spacer HSP-T46 is a square tool made of steel that slides over the Oz-Hammer (OH-01) and keeps it centered on the inside of the Oz-Post sleeve when installing the T46-850. This Hammer Spacer is used in conjunction with the OH-01 Oz-Hammer. The OH-01 Oz-Hammer is 2″ in diameter. The T46-850 is 3-1/2″ x 5-1/2″ inside diameter so we recommend using the HSP-T46 to keep the Oz-Hammer (OH-01) centered in the Oz-Post sleeve during installation. (Only one Spacer and One Driver is needed to drive all corresponding posts).

The T4-600 24 in. – 3 1/2 in. x3 1/2 in. OZ-Post Anchor is a modified version of the standard T4-850 post anchor that is specifically designed for areas that have hard packed soil, asphalt, rocky, roots or driving into rotten posts. The T4-600’s fin length is 30% shorter and is 50% thicker compared to the T4-850 to increase penetration performance in these difficult installation areas. The T4-600 should only be used for a privacy fence when the soil conditions are firm enough to support the project. This post anchor is also great for installation of mailbox posts, birdhouses, picket fence or other lightweight projects. Post anchors and base plates supporting a deck built without digging holes.

Deck blocks and post anchors combined with base plates can create a solid foundation for a deck substructure.

I’ve built many decks, and the hardest part is always digging the holes. It’s dirty work digging into the ground. In order to get enough space to ensure the posts are perfectly vertical, it’s normal to dig the hole wider than is strictly necessary for the post. When you add in the need to dig down past the frost line to keep the freezing ground from heaving the post up during winter, this can make for a big hole in the ground.

Unfortunately, nearly all of the methods of anchoring a post in the ground involve digging. Even foundations where you’re not actually putting a post into the ground require you to dig down deep in order to pour the concrete for a pier or footer. In fact, until recently there was no good way to build a deck without digging holes to anchor it unless you happened to be lucky enough to be building onto an existing concrete slab. The universal disdain for digging has not gone unnoticed, though, and there are now a couple of foundation systems that spare deck builders from the task of digging.

Bolts with sleeves don't need to be cut and have a neater appearance.

Bolts with sleeves create a cleaner, ornamental look when joining two timbers.

I’ve built many boardwalks, decks, arbors, pergolas, and pavilions over the years. Usually, they’re made from four-by-four posts with beams made from two two-by-sixes held on by bolts and nuts sandwiching the boards to the post. The bolts are usually bought in bulk, and are extra long so they’ll be able to reach through any number of boards. This leaves an unsightly three or four inches of threads clearly visible beyond the face of the board. If the bolt is any lower than about seven feet above ground, this becomes a safety hazard, because anyone using the structure could walk into the bolt end and injure themselves. If it’s higher than seven feet, then it’s just plain ugly. Cut bolts in a pavilion roof truss design, for example, can seriously detract from the structure’s appearance. Either way, using these bolts means I have little choice but to cut the bolt down to a more reasonable half inch or so of threads showing.

However, this creates a whole new host of problems, because cutting a bolt down neatly and safely is a surprisingly hard thing to do. It’s a “make-do” construction standard that persists because until recently there was no other option, and for the most part, no one has spared it any thought. However, newly developed bolts with sleeves work in a clever way so that there’s never any extra length sticking out. Before we explain them, though, let’s talk about why you should stop using your old bolts, the type that need to be cut down.

This asian inspired pergola design uses a red stain.

Red paint or stain, ornate hardware, and a privacy lattice can all help to give your pergola an Asian flair.

I have a client who is in the middle of a feng shui redesign. You might know already that feng shui is an Eastern design style used to maximize energy flow. The garden is one of the most important parts of this design philosophy, which is why my client was looking for an Asian inspired pergola design to set off her new, Eastern-style garden. I thought this was a great idea, as pergolas are easy to adapt for this type of design and there’s a wide range of options to choose from.

In an Asian design, pergolas are used to highlight water features, mark garden paths, and even to expand a home to include an outdoor living space complete with privacy screens. Often more elaborate than standard pergola designs, Eastern-type pergolas can be a bit more challenging to put together. However, with the right hardware and a good plan, it’s possible to create a beautiful, unique, and feng shui-friendly Asian pergola for your yard.

Attaching a Pergola to a House

A wall-leaning pergola offers lots of flexibility and versatility when it comes to size and location.

I had a friend who wanted to build a pergola but didn’t quite have the room for a four-post structure. His entryway was pretty narrow and pergolas tend to be kind of wide. But that was ok. As I told him, the beauty of pergolas is in their flexibility. I suggested a two-post structure, with his house acting as the support for the post-less side. Attaching a pergola to a house can save a bit of space while providing the support the structure needs. With a few adjustments to the standard design, and the installation of a strong ledger board, your house can act as your pergola’s support.

Traditionally, pergolas are four post structures, but as my friend learned, it’s also possible to work with two posts by using your home to support the other side of the structure. This is commonly called a wall-leaning pergola, and it’s an excellent option for the front of the house when you really want to create an entryway focal point. But this type of pergola also requires some special considerations, which we’ll examine below.
